Netflix definitely works for mystery-focused stories, as the recent success of “Glass Onion” has shown. Following this line, but betting even more on humor, the feature film “Seven Women and a Mystery” is currently triumphing on the platform.
In fact, the film managed to reach the top of Netflix’s list of international movies (not in English), with more than 9 million hours viewed.
It should be noted that this tape is an Italian remake of the 2002 French film «8 females» («8 women»), directed by François Ozon. The proposal is neither as complex nor as dark as the French version, which also highlights excellent musical scenes that this one lacks, but it offers an entertaining and light option for those who like the genre that highlights multiple suspects in a closed universe.
As in the original French version, “7 women and a mystery” features an ensemble cast loaded with “girl power.” Margherita Buy, Diana Del Bufalo, Sabrina Impacciatore, Benedetta Porcaroli, Micaela Ramazzotti, Luisa Ranieri and the iconic singer Ornella Vanoni are in charge of developing the story, which debuted on Netflix during the last week of 2022.
Although it is possible that for a large part of the public they do not know much about the work of these actresses, they are all big stars in the country of the boot.
This is what they say
“7 women and a mystery” was directed by the Italian filmmaker and playwright Alessandro Genovesi, who became known with films like “10 giorni with Babbo Natale (“10 Days With Santa Claus”).
The story, as the Filmaffinity synopsis highlights, begins on Christmas Eve. To celebrate the holiday, the women of a large family gather in a mansion, but soon discover that the man of the house, Marcello, has been murdered. To complicate matters, in addition to the fact that a snow storm has closed the roads, the telephone cables were cut and the door was closed. Thus, the situation becomes tense because neither trusts the other. They all have a motive and they are all suspicious.
The film cannot be compared in aspects such as tone, costumes and setting with the original, being at times more of a parody of the genre, but it finds its engine and support in the great chemistry displayed by the actresses. She especially highlights the interpretation of Margherita Buy (as Margherita), in the role of the matriarch, played by Catherine Deneuve more than 20 years ago.
Another one that stands out, like the always fearful Agostina, is Sabrina Impacciatore, who has made herself known internationally with the second season of the HBO series “The White Lotus.” Micaela Ramazzotti, for her part, comes off very well in her role as a vampire (Verónica), as well as Benedetta Porcaroli as the shy, but intelligent Catherina. Also notable are Ornella Vanoni, who shines as Rachele, and Luisa Raneri as Maria.
It is worth noting that the female brotherhood for which the plot also bets offers a more modern touch to this version, which leads it towards female empowerment, an approach more in line with current times. Duration: 1 hour and 24 minutes.
