Art commentary

Co-written and co-directed by the Daniels, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once is all at once a science fiction film, a comedy and an adventure film, all subdivided into three parts: Everything (All), Everywhere (Everywhere) and All at Once (All at once). The plot tells the difficult choice of Evelyn Wang, a Chinese-American manager of a laundromat, who must decide what existence and in which universe she intends to live ultimately with husband and daughter, after having been transported to countless universes (multiverse) in which she experienced alternate lives. Almost unrepeatable (do not miss the commentary in VOST of the directors) and addressing various essential philosophical themes (existentialism, identitarianism, nihilism), Everything Everywhere All at Once is a film that goes all over the place, teeming with metaphors and symbols and demonstrates an incredible screenplay inventiveness, capable of scattering the viewer, as the narrative tracks offered proliferate. In addition to its profuse intrigues, the film benefits from a unique aesthetic playing abundantly with a bumpy editing (cuts, transitions, image jumps) and various shooting formats (1.33/1, 1.85/1 , 2.00/1, 2.39/1) which contribute to the strangeness and dynamism of the feature film. The main character is a woman played by Michelle Yeoh, a male role initially planned for actor Jackie Chan until the authors changed their minds. Various other actors bring their talents to the story: Stephanie Hsu who embodies with slaughter Joy Wang become Jobu Tupaki in the Alphavers, Ke Huy Quan who succeeds in personifying the reserved Waymond Wang who transforms into a formidable and agile fighter in the Alphavers and James Hong who is both a sleepy grandpa and an implacable kingpin under the name of Gong Gong. Jamie Lee Curtis rejoices in erasing his sex appeal by playing the indescribable tax officer, Deirdre Beaubeirdra, with an improbable look. Wielding the absurd discrepancy with virtuosity, the Daniels mixed the trivial (taxes, the laundry, the bagel) with the existential questions (death, the black hole, the multiverses) in a joyful and energetic narrative and action whirlwind capable of stunned by an exponential influx of information: Everything Everywhere All at Once will require several visions to appreciate and identify its various layers! Everything goes very quickly with a disheveled realization which multiplies the images and the dialogues mixing humor, emotion and surrealism intertwined. We will appreciate the creativity of the authors, largely interspersed with cinematographic references, who offer us extravagant alternative universes, one of which, particularly tasty, with humans with sausage-shaped fingers (a macaroni universe was finally abandoned…). Everything Everywhere All at Once is a film teeming with more or less clever ideas but which lacks rigor despite its tripartite structure. Started with brilliance, the film does not manage to maintain its level of inventiveness, like the bagel universe, and ends up falling back into the eternal generational conflict and the happy ending with Hollywood sauce. Certainly crazy, forcing parody and nourished by pop culture and cinephilia, Everything Everywhere All at Once is an extremely entertaining show, but too long and unnecessarily chaotic.

Technical Comment

Image : UHD copy, excellent definition with remarkable sharpness despite the choice to give the film a semi-silver texture (digital shooting with Arri Alexa Mini cameras, Master Format 4K), very bright image with superbly controlled contrast in HDR, dense blacks but details in shadows, warm calibration, shimmering colorimetry with nuanced hues and saturated tones, very fluid compression

His : mixing Dolby Atmos, clear and precise dialogues, flawless dynamics supporting the many action atmospheres and music typical of Son Lux, effective spatialization with constant and immersive but relatively discreet surround effects, height channels opening up the space of certain scenes, remarkable use bass served by the LFE; VF Dolby Atmoseffective, dynamic, clear, neat dubbing but which loses all the intonations of the languages (English, Mandarin, Cantonese) but this is an essential point of the scenario since several scenes insist on the language and communication barrier!
