Disenchanted: Giselle Returns (2022)

Disenchanted: Giselle Returns (Disenchanted) is a film starring Amy Adams and directed by adam shankman.

With the usual Disney production quality, a great lead actress, and a cast with as much irony as sweetness, sweetness, sweetness, we are offered a film that pretends to laugh at itself, and that will appease the most “evil” cynics. from among the most malignant critics.

Plot

This is a story of what happens after “happily ever after.” Giselle is married and apparently happy in New York. Her life begins to take its toll on her, after years of marriage, of being a mother, the monotony of it all is boring. But then she sees a billboard, a Monroeville billboard. Without hesitation, Robert and Giselle decide to move to that idyllic and magical suburban city that reminds them so much of Andalasia.

With an extra emphasis on pastel colors, the setting is just lovely, and so fitting for this story. Disney has mastered the color palette of cheerful tones for set design and costume design.

With its pristine production, it sets the stage for a wonderful little story that takes time to gain traction, if ever. The fuzzy story makes me wonder which segment of the public would really enjoy this movie.

It’s always a pleasure to see perform Amy AdamsBeing the brilliant actress that she is, however, this role does not do her talents justice. It is true that her singing voice impresses us. At one point I began to worry about Giselle: was she really bedridden in a coma and dreaming? Time will tell…. And that reaction can be attributed to the awkward change, the transition, in the plot.

It was a casting success that Maya Rudolph will play the “evil” queen of the suburbs. This fantastic actress doesn’t shy away from accepting “different” roles, and she plays them well, and comically of course. Patrick Dempsey is fine as Robert the husband, one of the few characters who has any credibility. A credibility that fades once we get into the part of the fairy tale, which requires all its actors to overact, either for ironic effect or to live up to the surreal elements of lalaland.

As for the special effects, the CGI work is impeccable, but it doesn’t save the film. The costume designs are good, but the element that stands out is undoubtedly the excellent choreography.

‘Disenchanted’ is presented as an experiment, in which neither the target audience has been defined by its creators, with a plot that seems not to know where it is headed, devoid of shocking conflicts (big or small), nor does it give us turns impressive. Sure, one breathes a sigh of relief when Giselle changes her temper, but you’re already too late in the movie after waiting for that special something to happen.

Our opinion

Although it is well produced, it is very difficult to define this film. The comedy of this story lies in the presumed irony, unfortunately this is not translated strongly enough into the script or the songs. It has a wonderful cast, but the script doesn’t do them justice. Is it a Disney experiment to test if someone would want to see something like this, whether they are teenagers or old people?
