Gilbert Gottfried, Mr. Peabody from “Little Plague” is dead

The American actor and voice actor passed away at the age of 67 Gilbert Gottfriedfamous overseas as a comedian and for voicing Jafar’s parrot Iago in the Disney animated franchise Aladdin. The news of Gottfried’s disappearance came from his family, his film producer wife Dara Kravitz and their two children, Lily and Max. Gottfried’s death is due to a long illness, currently unspecified. The sad announcement was followed by a wave of tributes from fellow comedians, set partners and fans. He outlived his wife, film producer Dara Kravitz, and their two children, Lily and Max.

Gilbert Gottfried began his career as a comedian in New York where as a teenager he participated in various shows open to the public city where he earned the nickname of “comedian of comedians”. After a long apprenticeship in the stand-up comedy, in 1980 he joined the cast of the legendary Saturday Night Livewill follow the big screen debut in a couple of appearances in comedies House of God (1984) and Faculty of Medicine – Here it is not healthy (1985) and one of his best-known roles, that of impromptu corporate manager “Sidney Bernstein” in the sequel Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), critics praise the comedian (“Gilbert Gottfried steals the show with a unique sequence”); the same year he also appears in a series of promos for the newborn MTV and makes his first appearance in a TV series as a guest on the sitcom The Robinsons.

The 1990s mark another very popular role of Gottfried on the big screen, the actor plays Doctor Igor Peabody in the film. Little pest (1990) with the late John Ritter, director of the orphanage where Junior resides, the plague of the title. Peabody is a deceiver and liar who, at the request of the exasperated nuns who run the institute, always does everything to get rid of Junior, who however systematically returns to the fold. Gottfried will reprise the role in the sequel Little plague returns to do damage (1991) and in the tv movie Little pest falls in love (1995).

In the United States, Gottfried is also famous for voicing “Iago”, the wise parrot of the evil Jafar in the Disney classic. Aladdin (1992), his voice was so tied to the role that Gottfried will voice Iago in all subsequent sequels, in the TV series Aladdin, Aladdin On Ice and in the first two video games of Kingdom Hearts. The 2019 live-action remake of “Aladdin” was the first time Gottfried hasn’t voiced the character, replaced by Alan Tudyk. The success of the role of Iago will lead Gottfried towards a prolific voice acting career that includes roles in the animated film. Thumbelina – Thumbelina (1994), in the comedy Doctor Dolittle (1998) with Eddie Murphy and most recently in animated film Animal Crackers (2017) by Netflix.

Gottfried’s other credits include roles in Don, a horse for a friend, Look who’s talking 2, Highway to Hellin the sequels Sharknado 4, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming And The Last Sharknado – It was time!in the parody A million ways to die in the West and in the tv series Critters: A New Binge.

Before his death Gilbert Gottfried was preparing to shoot the play Hassle at the Castle directed by director Giorgio Serafini (Texas 46, Game of Death, Hard Rush). In the cast Jon Lovitz and Don Rickles, the latter passed away on April 6, 2017.
