Reboot (Disney +): should we watch the new satirical series with Paul Reiser from Crazy about you?

You had to dare. A series that parodies the universe (whimsical, ruthless, intriguing) of series. This is the credo of the new satirical series from Disney+, Reboot, available since Wednesday, November 2 on the platform. It is signed by Steven Levitanthe creator of the cult series Modern Family (whose actors have changed) and famous former screenwriter of sitcoms, those famous comedy television series with loud laughs. In eight episodes of about twenty minutesReboot brings sitcoms up to date, but this time, by pastiche.

What are you talking about Rebootthe new Disney+ series?

We follow the young feminist-intello-bobo screenwriter, a pure “showrunner” according to the American term, Hannah Korman (Rachel Bloom seen in crazy ex girfriend) who took it into his head to relaunch an old sitcom from the 1990s, a bit cheesy, Step Right Up, on the platform Hulu. But what she wants above all is to modernize it. Hear: produce a new, more committed version, “much more subversive”, as the character Hannah Korman asserts in the first episode. Problem, this adaptation does not please the creator of the original series, Gordon German (Paul Reiser of crazy about you) follower of outdated macho valves… who is none other than the father of Hannah Korman, having left the family home when she was seven years old.

But father and daughter will have to work together and settle their differences. Two worlds, two generations confront each other. Hannah decides to surround herself with black, overweight, gay or Latino screenwriters and write acerbic lines, some would say “woke”. Gordon remains camped on his outdated positions and his politically incorrect humor. Hear: sexist and racist. Around them gravitate the actors of the new series, who already played in the initial sitcom, but who did not have the prestigious careers they coveted. Reed (Keegan-Micheal Key, Pinocchio) starred in a commercial that sells hemorrhoid creams, Bree (Judy Greet, Halloween Kills), his ex-playing partner (and ex, for short), married a Scandinavian nobleman before ruining his marriage. Zack (Calum Worthy, Austin & Ally), 24 years old, childish eyes and justin bieberis still accompanied by his mother hen.

The characters are perhaps a little (too) caricatural, sometimes lacking depth and nuance, but the series draws its strength from an unfailing humor. Reboot oscillates between wacky gags, schoolboy humor and hilarious parodic moments. And above all, it has the merit of breaking down the barrier between “boomers” and “bobos”. “I think right now everyone feels like society is changing so fast that it’s hard to keep up with what’s acceptable, what’s funny, what’s good or bad, what we’re allowed to do”, recently assured Steven Levitan to Enternaiment weekly magazine. Couldn’t be happier.
