What is the story of Violent Night?
A slightly tipsy Santa Claus stands at the bar, waiting for another Christmas party to perform his annual task. However, the distribution of gifts and tasting of small cookies with milk will not take place as planned. Indeed, the tall man with the white beard slips into the Lightstones. Only problem, he does not know that this wealthy family is undergoing an unusual heist carried out by a group of mercenaries. Finding himself in spite of himself in a gigantic trap, Santa Claus will seek to save this family by his own means. But don’t be surprised, it turns out that the methods practiced by the cherubim idol are particularly violent.
Who are the creatives behind Violent Night?
Accustomed to parodies and comical films of all kinds, Tommy Wirkola is directing this new film. During his career, the 42-year-old Norwegian was keen to have fun with codes. Thus, his filmography is composed among others of Kill Buljo: Ze Film, a parody of Kill Bill, Dead Snow, a film opposing winter vacationers to Nazi zombies. He is also behind a violent and humorous version of the candy and witch myth, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. But the latter’s best-known title is undoubtedly the science fiction film Sevens Sisters, released in 2017. In writing, we find a duo made up of Josh Miller and Patrick Casey. They are used to working together. They had notably officiated on the two cinematographic adaptations of Sonic. Closer to the end of the year celebrations, we had been able to see them writing a web-series called The 12 Bloody Days of Christmas.

What is the cast of Violent Night?
We find some familiar faces in the distribution of this film which smells good of winter. Among other things, you may have recognized Stranger Things Sheriff in the person of David Harbor. Appreciated by fans of the Netflix series for his touching character and paternal instincts towards the young Eleven, he completely changes the register here. Other characters include Beverly D’Angelo and Alex Hassell as parents of the Lightstone family. The father of the latter is also the interpreter of the Translucent Explosive in Prime Video’s flagship series: The Boys. Leader of the Mercenaries, Ben is played by John Leguizamo. The latter embodies Aurelio in the first two episodes of John Wick. Anecdote that may make you see this antagonist in a different light, he is also the English voice of Sid in the Ice Age license.

To experience the holidays differently from your usual, the film revisits the myth of Santa Claus. This style of initiative had been done before. Thus, you will surely be able to store this production alongside other offbeat adventures telling the stories of Santa Claus. In your library, you can put it alongside more or less original seasonal films like Santa & cie, Bad Santa, the Grinch or the Pole Express. Quite frankly, there is still time to bring out our national classic: Santa Claus is garbage.
