Seven new actors have joined the cast of the Amazon Studios series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerand will have recurring roles in season two.
First of all, there are six actors who will play gods characters not yet appeared in the series: Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle and Nicholas Woodeson.
One of them is likely to interpret Círdan, noble elf and great opponent of Sauronwhich is expected to make an appearance in the new season.
The same is true of Celeborn, spouse of the Lady of Lothlorien. Although Galadriel has declared that her husband was killed, Celeborn will have to return sooner or later to avoid contradictions with Tolkien’s novels.
The unexpected recast for Rings of Power 2
The role of the announced seventh actor is surprising, Sam Hazeldine, who was cast as the orc leader Adar.
The news caused a stir among fans of the series: Joseph Mawle playing Adar had given one of the best performances of the first season of the show.
Mawle had been able to give life to an enigmatic and innovative character from Middle-earth, raising philosophical and ethical questions about the Orc peoplecertainly not unpublished in Tolkien’s writings but extraneous to Jackson’s films. No reason was given for the recasting.
