THE EYE OF THE WITNESS OF THIS THURSDAY

KEEMTAAN GI – EMBASTILLE TO EACH HIS JOURNALIST!
And presto, a journalist in prison! Another promise from the Chef that he will not have respected! He who said with confidence to his Toubab friends that we would never see under his governance a journalist in jail for press offences. We know what his word is worth… The corporation can be indignant but also consider itself happy that our colleague is not prosecuted for financial embezzlement, counterfeiting, overbilling or trafficking in diplomatic passports. Practices in which the punters of the Republic and their offspring shine and excel. Pape Alé Niang in prison, it is the freedom of the press and our democracy that take a big hit. It must be said that with this regime, we have returned to the dark hours of the first years of our independence marked by Stalinist practices. Our prisons today are populated by prisoners of conscience. For two years, the power has systematically hunted down opponents. Two young people have been languishing in prison for months for having parodied the front pages of certain daily newspapers. Others, who had carried out the same “crime”, calmly go about their business. They had taken the precaution of caricaturing the number one enemy of power. Two-speed justice. Others are suspected of being terrorists without a single lighter being found on them. The only Molotov cocktail they threw having gone spit. They were given the name of special forces. Among these unfortunates whose fault is to oppose power, honorable mothers and fathers of families. Even Wade with his “March 19, 2011 plotters” hadn’t come to that end. And we have the impression that the Chef finds a malicious pleasure in embastilling his detractors. He who had done everything not to go to Rebeuss in the affair of the containers filled with money unloaded at the Port of which the last Minister of Justice of Wade accused him. Wade got his Madiambal Diagne? Well, Macky has his Pope Alé Niang!
KACCOOR BI – THE WITNESS

MACKY CATCHES BY THE VAR A JOURNALIST THROWED IN PRISON
The President of the Republic was overtaken by the Var of the media. He gloried on foreign TV sets to say that there is no journalist imprisoned for his writings and his opinions in Senegal. “You will never see in Senegal during my governance, a journalist imprisoned for press offences. Journalists have no risk in Senegal. That I say very clearly and I will not be denied” so spoke Macky Sall in October 2015 on the French channel iTélé, which became CNews. Well, since this Wednesday, November 09, he now has in his prisons filled with activists a journalist in this case Pape Alé Niang.

MACKY SALL AND THE PRESS A CHAPELET OF CONFRONTATION
In the light of the imprisonment of Pape Alé Niang, the string of confrontations between the press and President Macky Sall unfolds sequences that national public opinion tends to forget. But the Witness refreshes certain facts which relate to the arrest of journalists in the exercise of their mission of informing the public. Indeed, from the accession of President Macky Sall, in 2012, to this Wednesday, November 09, 2022, many journalists from the private media were summoned before the formidable Criminal Investigations Division (Dic) of the police or the Research Section of the National Gendarmerie following the publication of articles linked to the regime in place. We take the case of the former editor of the newspaper “L’Observateur”, Alioune Badara Fall, following an article by his reporter Mamadou Seck on the dispatch to Saudi Arabia of 2,100 Senegalese soldiers for the war in Yemen, published on May 8, 2015. The same year, three journalists from D-Média were also summoned by the same Criminal Investigations Division (Dic) following the resumption of an article published by the French newspaper Le Monde incriminating the current chief of the State, Macky Sall, in the Russian funds of Lamine Diack. We do not forget the case of Dean Adama Gaye. Following a text shared on his Facebook page, the latter was arrested on July 29 by the Criminal Investigations Division, on the instructions of the former public prosecutor, for “offending the President of the Republic” and “undermining the state security”. He spent more than a month in prison in humiliating and degrading conditions. The former secretary general of Synpics, Ibrahima Khaliloulah Ndiaye, had strongly denounced these series of arrests, speaking of “attempts at intimidation”. “Journalists should only be there for the public interest. They must ensure that what our leaders hide is known to the general public. Therefore, journalists must not give in to pressure or intimidation. They must continue to do their job in compliance with existing rules and laws, and only aim to inform the public,” he confided in the columns of the Observer. But go and explain this to the public prosecutor or to the Minister of the Armed Forces, Me Sidiki Kaba, yet former president of the International Federation for Human Rights (Fidh)!
