Julián, a 50-year-old divorcee with financial problems, uses an application to share his car with strangers and, especially, with someone who is not so stranger anymore: Lorena, a young woman who often travels to Madrid. For months she has had a fixed seat in her car and lately also in her heart. Julián wants to take advantage of the trip to be honest with her, but a mistake when choosing the rest of the occupants includes a disturbing passenger, who will cause a radical change in the course of events.
a unique manager
What am I going to tell about Alex de la Iglesia what don’t you already know? The filmmaker from Bilbao directs and co-scripts this fantastic film to prove once again that he is one of the greatest in his sector, before and today. Curiously, it has only won one Goya award out of up to 10 nominations. He got it with the cult tape The Day of the Beast. We are talking about a guy with a lot of charisma, different and without complexes, who shows what he wants on screen and with a marked style. In addition, he has given us a unique filmography with titles such as mutant action (1993), The Day of the Beast (nineteen ninety five), dead laughing (1999), Community (2000), Crime ferpect (2004), sad trumpet ballad (2010), The witches of Zugarramurdi (2013), perfect strangers (2017) and the series 30 coins (2020).
I never I have been a devotee of this gentleman, but it is iHis talent for cinema is undeniable., to which it prints its own character and style. And that is to be appreciated, that filmmakers do original things, whether they like it or not. Something very his, house brand, is that increasingly frenetic pace which we also see in this movie. That typical narrative resource of his that presents a normal and everyday reality, in this case an older man who wants to come clean with a handsome young girl, and how adds external elementsalso characters, who become part of the story to generate chaos.
good background work
With a well outlined and perfectly connected script in all the plots, the director offers a quite remarkable comedy that, above all, achieves its purpose of entertaining the viewer. An hour and forty minutes that fly by for you to enjoy something light but also intense, always with the stamp of De la Iglesia.
The great thing about this film by the eternal Álex is that everything that comes out seems superfluous and inconsequential but brimming with strength and good background work. It shows a well-crafted story with characters, although parodied, well built for a common destiny. Nothing is ever left over, everything contributes what is necessary so that you you’re glued to the seat in the movie theater and also reflections with what is seen.
Because this is what it is, an entirely surreal parody but in a good way. We are not seeing a pretentiously solemn film where some scenes fail due to lack of creativity and are absurd, but rather we are facing a film where the absurd is the dish that there is to eat, is the ingredient of De la Iglesia’s cinema and we see it a lot here. And honestly, it’s great.
Great Characters, Better Performances
And how Alex de la Iglesia gives so much power to his caricatured characters, the interpretation is fundamental. And here it does not fail. Albert Saint John He is 10 playing that grumpy and bitter Julián, who little by little will have to give in to the chaos of the narrative imposed by the director. It is fantastic to see how his walls of correctness, good sense and reason are being undone. Blanca Suarez it is quite correct, not excellent, but notable enough to make that perfect mesh with the other two.
Sure, then we have the great Ernest Alterio, for which I confess I feel a special weakness. I love this actor, who always gives so much to his characters and this time there is no exception. We see a real ghost, he sells smoke, fake like few others, who always has an ace up his sleeve. Taken advantage of, dirty, creeping, which also brings to the trio a barbaric sense of humor. San Juan is the vehicle of the film, but it is true that this is that bridge to excellence in the comic section. A beast.
Then we see apparitions like Carlos Areces Y Jaime Ordonez, with a little more weight than the rest of the secondary, and with surprisingly effective characters. In short, a film to enjoy and laugh, always hand in hand with Alex de la Iglesia
