Three questions about Canal+’s two new 100% sport channels

Launched this Wednesday, August 31, at no additional cost to subscribers, Canal+ Foot and Canal+ Sport 360 are turning the TV group’s sports offer upside down. We will explain everything to you.

To watch Toulouse / PSG, match of the 5th day of Ligue 1, this Wednesday at 9 p.m., it will not be necessary to turn on Canal +, Canal + Sport or Canal + Décalé, but Canal + Foot, one of the two new channels that the Canal group launches today, at no additional cost to subscribers. The other is called Canal+ Sport 360, and chose Lille/Nice for its baptism, at the same time. Complicated ? Follow the leader !

What are these new channels?

They are aptly named: you can only find football on Canal+ Foot. With the two Ligue 1 matches per day, the entire Premier League, the majority of European Cup matches, the English championship, the women’s D1, but also the National as well as the France Espoirs team, the TV group felt ready to launch a channel 100% devoted to football. Which allows him to resuscitate the show football daybut in another form: it is now a thirty-minute daily, at 8:30 p.m., presented by Éric Besnard.

As for Canal+ Sport 360, its mission is to cover sports “sensations”, that is to say Moto GP, the WRC, boxing, padel, a few major tournaments such as Eurobasket (which starts on Thursday) and then… football, too, with the Ligue 1 poster on Saturday at 9 pm. On weekdays, the Infosport + news will be co-broadcast, before a new daily evening show (between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.), the Late Sports Club.

What about Canal+, Canal+ Sport and Canal+ Décalé?

Now for sure, there will be no more sport on Canal+ Décalé. The premium channel, however, retains the broadcasting of the most important meetings: the Top 14, all the Formula 1 Grand Prix, one Champions League match per day as well as the Premier League poster on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ( which makes it possible to recall that, for Canal, the English championship comes before the French championship).

With all that, the historic Canal+ Sport is a bit deserted. You will only find Pro D2, a bit of women’s D1 and motor racing qualifications…

Why this multiplication of channels?

After securing the rights to the Top 14 until 2027 and to F1 until 2029, Canal has secured the exclusivity of the European Football Cups over the period 2024-2027. A big blow, which shows that if the group is cold with the Professional Football League, it is not with sport in general. After being jostled by the arrivals of beIN Sports, RMC, Mediapro and then Amazon, and while Disney and Apple have already launched themselves into sport abroad, Canal sends the message that it is still one of the main players. on the market, if not the most powerful.

But the message is also intended for its own teams. The hunt for Sébastien Thoen’s supporters, fired in November 2020 for parodying the CNews show Time for the pros, made the atmosphere deadly internally. Mobilization of unions, demonstrations, open letters, dismissals for those who insisted on their freedom of expression (including that of star commentator Stéphane Guy), permanent threat of being summoned to the superior… Management according to Vincent Bolloré has left its mark . Today, the editorial staff changes premises (from Boulogne-Billancourt to Issy-les-Moulineaux), director (Thomas Sénécal replaces Thierry Cheleman), acquires new rights and launches two new channels. To convince himself that it was all just a bad memory.
