There has been no shortage of gangster movies over the years, and due to the popularity of this genre, there is no shortage of gangster movie parodies either. Many of these movies and shows offer their own version of the oft-told story of someone’s life in organized crime. These include full-fledged comic satires like Analyze it (1999) to more serious but still subtle “dramedies” such as The Sopranos (1999-2007). Now Bleecker Street is set to deliver its own version of a gangster parody with dark comedy, mafia mom.
mafia momrealized by Dusk (2008) filmmaker Catherine Hardwicksees Knives out Star Toni Collette Play as a lonely and unlucky suburbanite who is unexpectedly thrown into the complicated world of crime. Traveling to rural Italy, Collette’s character is chosen to become the new boss of one of the country’s most feared crime families, a job she can’t even begin to figure out how to do given that ‘she’s never set foot in Europe before and most of her knowledge of the mafia comes from the shows and movies mentioned above. She’ll have to learn the ropes and learn them fast if she ever hopes to be treated like the ruthless mob boss her peers want her to be and become the “Mafia Mamma” (although her employees probably won’t call her not like this) .
For the full cast, plot, trailer and more about the latest mob comedy, here’s everything we know so far about mafia mom.
Does Mafia Mamma have a release date?
Typically, when a first trailer drops for a new movie, a release date is attached at the end. This is not the case for mafia mom, because all we get is the classic “Coming Soon” phrase, with no specific date set by Bleecker Street. Now, there are reports that the movie will be released on April 14, 2023, but again, that hasn’t been confirmed by Bleecker Street. We can most likely expect to see mafia mom premiere in 2023 or early 2024 at the latest. However, we do know in what format the film will be released once a date is finally set.
Will Mafia Mamma be released in streaming or theaters?
The description of the trailer confirms that mafia mom will be released in theaters. No plans have been announced for a streaming or VOD release yet.
In the first trailer for mafia mom, we are quickly introduced to the protagonist, Kristin Balbano (Toni Collette), who lives her daily life in the suburbs of the United States before receiving a surprising phone call. This call is coming from Italy, and on the other line is a woman named Bianca (Monica Bellucci), which we will discover later is the consigliere of the Balbano family. Bianca informs Kristin that her grandfather, Giuseppe Balbano (Alexandre Bressanello), left us. Even though this seems like tragic news, Kristin is quite indifferent to it, as she informs Bianca that she never really knew her grandfather. Despite this, Kristin is invited to attend her grandfather’s funeral which takes place in Rome. Realizing it could be an exciting vacation and a way to see the country her family is from, she eventually accepts the offer.
Kristin arrives in Rome, the funeral service begins, and she begins to ask Bianca who her grandfather was. She discovers this unexpectedly, as the motorcade is ambushed by armed assassins pursuing Kristin, which naturally prompts her to ask what is going on in the world. Kristin is taken back to the Balbano estate, where an earlier recording of her grandfather tells Kristin why she is there. Even though she and her grandfather did not have a close relationship, she is still one of his last living relatives and he chose Kristin to become his successor. With Bianca’s encouragement, she decides to try running a murderous criminal organization. The trailer finally ends with a mafia mom title card, which of course is strongly reminiscent of the logo of The Godfather (1972). Oddly enough, the only thing the trailer doesn’t include is a release date.
