The film “X: A Sexy Horror Story” was banned for minors because it was deemed too extreme and therefore not suitable for young people.
On the same day of the theatrical release in Italy in over 200 copies (the debut was yesterday, July 14), the Commission for the classification of cinematographic works appointed by the Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual of the Ministry of Culture decided to ban smaller the film.
“The set of scenes in which one or more sensitive contents are present, the tone and potential impact of the same as well as the narrative context, the level of intensity of the sensitive content detected” are the reasons that led the commission to favor the prohibition. The new film directed by the American director, screenwriter, editor, director of photography Ti West (Cabin Fever 2, The Innkeepers, The Sacrament) is strong in a mix that many consider explosive: horror is shaken to porn, in an unprecedented cocktail that for many is intoxicating. But the very basic ingredients of that cocktail (horror and pornography) led to raising the ban on viewing for adults. That was to be expected, however.

A fairly obvious ban
Probably the production of the film was expecting this, given the title he chose. “X: A Sexy Horror Story” opted for the X precisely to refer to the “X” classification used by the American censors (MPAA) from 1968 to 1990, the one that indicated that a film was only suitable for viewers of at least 16 years. Many films have chosen the X-rating route in order not to have to submit films to the MPAA to obtain an age certificate. “Noteworthy films originally released with an X rating include Clockwork Orange (1971), Fritz the cat (1972), Last tango in Paris (1972) and A man from the sidewalk (1969) ”, writes Pietro Ferraro on Cineblog. “In the 1970s the porn industry will eventually take advantage of the X-rating’s lack of a brand by releasing porn in theaters with the same rating. Eventually, X became a rating more associated with porn, and more and more cinemas began refusing to show movies with an X rating, forcing non-pornographic films to be censored to receive an ‘R’ rating. In 1990, the MPAA discontinued the X classification and replaced it with NC-17. Unlike X, NC-17 was a registered trademark and could not be self-applied ”, explains Pietro Ferraro.
Horror movie, when fear comes from the water
“X: A Sexy Horror Story” stars Mia Goth (who starred in the movie “The cure from wellness” and the remake of “Suspiria”) and Jenna Ortega (who played Sara Carpenter in the recent Scream and also starred in the sequel The babysitter – Killer Queen of Netflix and in Study 666the film by Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters) and is distributed by Midnight Factory, a label owned by Koch Media.
The cast also includes Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi (this is the first horror film for rapper and actor Kid Cudi), Martin Henderson, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, James Gaylyn, Simon Prast, Geoff Dolan, Matthew J. Saville, Bryony Skillington.
Men, red band trailer of the upcoming horror that makes you escape from the hall
The film sets the story in 1979 and tells of a troupe of young people who, in order to make money, decide to pursue a career in porn, making an adult film in Texas. The title is Farmer’s Daughters, so the production chooses a farm outside Houston. Actors and cameramen are guests at the home of an elderly couple, in rural Texas, and slowly the two elderly gentlemen begin to show a strange and very disturbing morbid interest in red light actors, with lust attached. Finally one night that fixation will erupt, leaving behind an immense (and kilometric) trail of blood.
Note how there really is a red light movie called The farmer’s daughters: a 1976 film (while this film is set three years later, in 1979) that became famous for starring Spalding Gray before becoming a mainstream film writer and actor.
Great approval recorded by the film
Men, the horror so disturbing that it makes the audience run away from the cinema
“X: A Sexy Horror Story” got a 95% Fresh score on RottenTomatoes and the approval of the king of terror, aka Maine Master Stephen King (who called it “an extremely good horror movie. Scary, clever. , aware. Ah! And funny too “).
The debut of “X – A sexy horror story” by Ti West comes “preceded by enthusiastic reviews, which portend a cult career”, writes the journalist Roberto Nepoti on the Republic. “The A24 production, which has distinguished itself in recent years for the production of quality horror (The Witch, Midsommar), inaugurates a reckless synergy between pornographic film and fear cinema that seems to open up unexplored territories ”, adds Nepoti. The reporter from Republic he notes that the most immediate reference is that of the so-called “gore” trend such as “Don’t open that door”, “however the care of the filmic language and the psychological ideas go beyond the pure horror of exploitation for the summer evenings”. And she explains how “between one quote and another (Psycho), young people will realize that they have become the protagonists of a horror film ”.
A summer full of hat horror thanks to A24
The best zombie movies, waiting for “Coupez!”
As for A24, we remind you that one of his other horror films whose premises are nothing short of enthusiastic is about to arrive in Italy: we are talking about “Men”, the horror so disturbing that it makes spectators flee from the cinema.
The new film directed by British filmmaker Alex Garland released in the United States on June 1 marks a foray by the science fiction master into the horror genre. As many people write on social media, many viewers could not resist such a shock: they left the cinema in a hurry.
Waiting for the arrival of the film in Italy, we can say that already from the trailer it is clear that this is not a marketing move: it just seems something so terrible that I can’t stand it. “Men” will arrive in Italian cinemas on 25 August.
