We have all wondered at least once about that paradigmatic evolutionary mystery that tries to understand if the chicken or the egg came first; an enigma that, wherever you try to solve it, always presents short-circuits and inconsistencies.
A bit like the loveone could say, and in fact, in this short cartoon – a sweet and ironic sentimental comedy – an attempt is made to exactly transpose the scientific question into a “love story” key and therefore, no longer on the level of “who was born first”, but: “Which of the two should be given precedence”?
And is it so difficult to answer this question?
Absolutely yes, if the protagonist is a pig (Henry) literally greedy for eggs (he eats lots of them, cooked in a pan!), and the love of his dreams is a hen beautiful and sexy (Evelyn, ornamental hen of course!) that makes his heart flutter.
Will feelings or belly win? 🙂
The choice, for our pig, seems apparently easy only at the beginning, in the courtship phase, when everything is beautiful, new, fantastic and full of love. But slowly as time passes, abstinence from egg it makes itself felt; the need to eat them gets stronger and stronger and he is attacked by hallucinations and by the fear of not being able to do without them for life…
The difficulty of giving up for love brings our good pig to see eggs everywhere, until, on a stormy night (and it could not be otherwise!), he escapes from his bed at home to go and feast on fried eggs at the restaurant where he used to go…
We won’t tell you the ending.
Will the hen (love) be able to beat the egg (drives)?
Chicken or egg first? The ancestral dilemma reinterpreted in a “love story” key 🙂
The short film “Chicken or the Egg” was made in 2013 by Christine Kim & Elaine Wu of the Ringling College of Art and Design of Florida. The animation filmin just over a year, has collected more than 2 million views on Vimeo and about 750,000 on Youtube, also attracting the attention of many insiders who have pushed the work to participate in various very important industry events: Philadelphia Film & Animation Festival, South Dakota Film Festival, Pentedattilo International Short Film festival, Rhode Island Internal Film Festival, …and many others, which you can scroll directly on their Facebook page.
Below is a parody poster that a professor at the Institute of Design wanted to create as a tribute to the making of the film in a “Star Wars” vein.
Below instead the two protagonists Henry and Evelyn during breaks in filming! 🙂
Today Elaine Wu is a designer at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and thus recalls the experience of making the animated film “Chicken or the Egg”:
“First of all, I thank all the people who appreciated and shared our work of that time, allowing us to become quite well known and known. A job now gone, to which I have given a lot, with many sleepless nights spent conceiving and drawing drafts, but today I miss that atmosphere of creativity and passion a little, of commitment to a project as if my whole life depended from that… I don’t know if today I could do what I did for Chicken or the Egg, but I have to tell the truth, when I see the commitment and the works of the new student artists, a bit of nostalgia comes over me!”
Below are some of his sketches.
