Other Halloween specials
Halloween specials from The Simpsons are episodes of the popular cartoon television series, which are broadcast around the date of the Halloween holiday, October 31.
In English they are called The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror. In Spain they are called The tree house of terror and in Latin America The little house of horror.
Each of them consists of two or three segments or short stories that are independent of each other, which generally involve the Simpson family in some horror, science fiction or supernatural story.
They are episodes considered “out of canon”, that is, they always take place outside the normal continuity of the series and have no pretense of being realistic. They are much more violent and dark than the rest of the episodes of the series.
the first episode, Treehouse of Horror, aired on October 25, 1990 as part of the second season and was inspired by EC Comics horror stories. There are over 30 special Halloween episodes, with one airing each year.
The episodes contain several trademarks, including the aliens Kang and Kodos, “scary names” in the end credits for the crew making the episode, a special version of the opening sequence, and sci-fi and horror film parodies.
Series staff say special Halloween episodes are particularly difficult to produce and scripts are often done after many rewrites and animators often have to design new characters and backgrounds.
Many of these episodes are hugely popular with fans of the series and critics alike, and have collectively inspired the release of promotional merchandise for The Simpsons, including dolls, video games, books, DVDs, comics, and a special version of the Monopoly game.
Several of the episodes have won awards for animation and sound editing. In 1996, Treehouse of Horror VI was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Animated Program Less Than One Hour”, but did not win.
