US ‘will never recognize’ Russian annexations of Ukrainian territories

Washington. The United States warned that “it will never recognize” the Russian annexations of Ukrainian territories, for which it will ignore the results of the referendums to annex pro-Russian areas of that country.

“These referendums are an affront to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that underpin the international system,” said White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. “The United States will never recognize Russia’s claims to any allegedly annexed part of Ukraine,” he added.

The pro-Russian separatist territories of Donetsk and Lugansk, in the Donbas region (eastern Ukraine) as well as the Kherson (south) and Zaporizhia (southeast) regions, all occupied by Moscow’s forces, announced the call for referendums from 23 to September 27 to rule on annexation to Moscow.

These consultations are based on the one that confirmed the annexation by Russia of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and that was denounced by the international community. Sullivan said the referendums and reports of a Russian plan to call more troops into Ukraine reflect Moscow’s recent setbacks in the war, with Ukrainian forces taking back significant chunks of territory. “These are not actions of a trusting country. These are not acts of force, quite the opposite,” Sullivan said.

The referendums called in several regions of Ukraine to decide on the annexation to Russia constitute an “additional escalation” to the war, affirmed the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg.

“False referendums have no legitimacy and do not change the nature of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This is a new escalation in the war of [Vladimir] Putin,” Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter.

According to the head of the Western military alliance, “the international community must condemn this flagrant violation of international law and step up support for Ukraine.”

The pro-Russian separatist territories of Donetsk and Lugansk – both in the Donbas region, in eastern Ukraine – as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions announced the call for annexation referendums from 23 to 27 this month. Ukraine responded immediately, promising to “liquidate” the Russian “threat”.

“Ukraine is going to solve the Russian question. The threat can only be liquidated by force,” the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andrii Yermak, wrote on Telegram.

For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday called the announcement of referendums in Ukraine’s four breakaway regions a “parody” and said they “will have no legal consequences.”

“I think this is a parody that has been announced by Russia,” Macron told reporters at the United Nations (UN) headquarters, where the annual General Assembly is taking place.

“The only thing that exists is the war decided by Russia, the resistance of Ukraine and the end of the war that we want,” added the president, who will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in the coming days.”

“This is one more provocation” that “will not have any consequence on our position,” Macron said. “The very idea of organizing referendums in regions that have known war, that have suffered bombing, is the height of cynicism,” he lashed out before delivering his speech to the General Assembly.
