Weird review: The Al Yankovic Story, a hilarious biopic parody with Daniel Radcliffe

With so many film releases each year, it is inevitable that there will be certain films that can go unnoticed because its launch often takes time to reach our country for various reasons. One of them is Weird: The Al Yankovic Storya film that parodies musical biopics and that in recent months has given a lot of talk.

But being a film produced and released by The Roku Channel, there was uncertainty as to how it could be seen in countries where the platform does not operate (including Spain), where Weird Al Yankovic himself has suggested watching his film through piracy if you live outside the US.

However, it will not be necessary to go to such extremes in these parts, since Movistar Plus+ will bring the film from December 30. We have already been able to enjoy it and then we share what we think of it in our review of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Weird: The Al Yankovic, the film that parodies musical biopics

For some time now we have had a good consignment of musical biopics in film format, flooding movie theaters with the story behind some of the best-known singers and groups.

It was a matter of time before someone made a film parodying the genre, and this is how we have been able to contemplate it with this feature film directed by Eric Appellwhose script he has co-written with the real Weird Al Yankovic.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story began in 2010 as a fake trailer released on funny or diedirected by Appel and which parodied the more serious musical biographies such as walk the line Y ray. But in the wake of movie hits like Bohemian Rhapsodythe director decided to make his fake trailer a real movie.

The result is this fun biopic that follows the life of the musician Weird Al Yankovic and exaggerates “a little” his story by telling how he swept the world by parodying the most iconic musical themes.

One of the funniest comedies of the year with a cast to match

As soon as you have seen a musical biopic, you will immediately see references everywhere in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, well the film does not shy away from using the most recurring clichés of the genre as a parodyfrom the father who doesn’t want his son to fulfill his dreams as a musician to how he carves out an exaggerated fame by hobnobbing with legendary artists.

But it does not stop at that, but rather As the film progresses, it goes even further, parodying other film genres to the point of going too far with surrealism and hilarious situations.but even with that, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is highly enjoyable and will make its 108-minute duration fly by.

This would not be possible without the excellent performance by Daniel Radcliffe, whose characterization as Weird Al Yankovic is impeccable. The actor has long shown that he is much more than Harry Potter and in this film he is no exception.

Nor should we forget Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), who plays a young Madonna to whom she gives a personality as twisted as she is hilarious in a very, very alternative version of the iconic singer (when you see the movie you’ll understand).

To this we must add the appearance of performers such as rainn wilson (the iconic Dwight Schrute of The office), Jack Black (Super Mario Bros: The Movie), lin manuel miranda (hamilton) either Julianne Nicholson (Blonde), among others.

If you have Movistar Plus+ and you are into absurd humor movies, then do not hesitate and take a look at Weird: Al Yankovic StoryWell, we guarantee that it is a tape with which you will end the year in style.
