Bones and All, in search of the affective tribe: Luca Guadagnino, Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell speak

Two young people in search of love and acceptance, two outcasts at the center of the cannibalistic film Bones and All, presented in competition today at the Venice Film Festival. Luca Guadagnino, Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell spoke to the press about it.

Finding your own tribe. There has been much talk of this momentum that animates the protagonists of Bones and Allbut ultimately all of us too, during the press conference to present the film by Luca Guadagninoin competition today at Venice Film Festival and from November 23 in Italian cinemas for Vision Distribution. Starting with the two protagonists, Timothee Chalametwho returns to work with the Italian director, who launched it five years ago in Call me by your nameand a surprising one Taylor Russell.

Chalamet is known as Timmy to the many fans who adore him and have followed him here too, placing from the early hours of the morning along the red carpet for a photo or an autograph. For a few days in Italy, he has attended a football championship match with Roma on the field, complete with photos with Mourinho. They are days off from the ongoing filming of Dunes 2. He recalled how his tribe was for him, growing up in New York, “the theater community, made up of great actors who have been a reference. My grandmother passed away recently, she had a career in entertainment and I felt very much part of a community that I am at home in, that of the theatre. This story was developed at the height of the pandemic and a big part of it was being cut off from the social context that makes us understand where we are in the world. The story of Maren and Lee, especially Maren, with fantastic work by Taylor, tells of young people isolated in an absolute way and without identitywho gather information about who they are through the mirror of love and exchanged glances. Bones and all was a really learning experience“.

Taylor Russell, certainly not in her first role but really convincing in the film, says that her tribe is still looking for her, “I have some special people that I speak to a lot but it’s the beauty of living on Earth to find more and more people to find a relationship with deep and secret connection. But I hold on to the ones I have.”

Guadagnino is in his first American film. Why only now, despite many proposals and a success for years more in those parts than in Italy? “Since I was a child I have dreamed of making films, nourished by the imagery of American cinema that shaped me. Perhaps unconsciously I tried to defer a world of such complexity until I became a more mature person. He was born, Bones and allfrom one of those unforeseen events that make my friendship with the screenwriter beautiful, Dave Kajganichwith whom I have already collaborated in A Bigger Splash and Suspiria. He had worked on this script independently from me, he let me read it and it became inevitable to tell these drifters in search of the possible in the impossible and everything happened. A team effort, with that family which is now represented by the people I’ve been working with for years. This is what gives me pleasure, deeply collective work. It’s a privilege.”
