Malheurs Actuels will have its special magazine for this end of the year, in which we have already had the right to an editorial by Guillaume Meurice, columnist on France Inter.
IN: What is Malheurs Actuels?
Albin Wagener: it’s a bit like Gorafi vert, an independent, voluntary and parodic media dedicated to climate inaction. It was in July 2022, faced with the fairly rich climate news and the heat wave, that with other people (Romain Enjalbert, Florian Dean, Cyrielle Istin, Matthew Thomas) we decided to create Current Woes. Today, we are an association made up of 15 volunteers, 12 of whom are very active and come from quite varied backgrounds. We work with executives, business leaders, communication professionals and even researchers.
IN: Was laughter important in view of the current context?
AW: we noticed that when talking about climate and the environment in a serious way, the impact was not the same as when using humour. Laughter allows you to accept reality, without giving up. We laugh to motivate and mobilize ourselves and thus move from anger, anxiety or any other negative emotion to action. Numbers are not always enough, we have to seek out positive emotions in the current context. Laughter makes it possible to take people with pedagogy towards solutions and change.
IN. : what do you forbid yourself in terms of editorial content?
AW: in our publications, we are careful not to make fun of a person or a minority group under the pretext of making jokes. It’s a rule.
IN: you managed to build a good audience in less than six months, how did it get organized?
We address these very distinct communities in different ways, we know for example that LinkedIn has a more professional and older audience thaninstagram. The personalities are different and the humor too.
We have an audience of “convinced” who actively follow Current Woes and in which we find committed people who are already committed at their level. But it’s amusing to see that with humour, we manage to reach people in the second or third circle who until now were not touched by climate issues.
We would like to arrive in 2023 with new formats such as vox pop videos or the intervention of personalities.
IN: do you want to develop the medium?
AW: we have lots of projects, but at the moment we don’t always have enough time to carry them out
because we are volunteers and we do not live from this media. However, we do our best to devote as much time to it as we can. We would like to arrive in 2023 with new formats such as vox pop videos or the intervention of personalities.
We are launching a special magazine for this end of the year, in which we have already had the right to an editorial Guillaume Meuricecolumnist on France Inter.
IN: a quick word on COP 27?
AW: on our side, we participated in the SYNCOP27 to House Glaz in Gavres, in Brittany. We gathered around workshops to talk about the climate, always with humour.
If not to come back to the COP, we can highlight that this year a fund for states victims of pollution has been set up. However, we are not solving the problem of the origin of the emission of greenhouse gases. We risk forming a vicious circle.
It is also important to note that this is the first time that there are so many oil lobbies in a COP. We have to realize how dependent we are on them, and how dependent they make us.
For this end of the year Current Woes launch a fundraiser KissKissBankBank, of which half of the objective has already been achieved. Once the production costs have been covered, the profits will be donated in three parts: the association Malheurs Actuels, to cover the costs, but also a “Green, the media that announces color” independent media that deals with the climate, and an organization who works for biodiversity.
