“Lisa could be a queer character“. The Lisa in question is Lisa Marie Simpsonknown simply as Lisa Simpson, one of the protagonists of the animated television series “The Simpsons”, Created by the cartoonist Matt Groening. The series, now in its 34th season, is one satirical parody of American society and lifestyle, personified by the Simpson family, consisting of Homer (stereotype of the middle-class American, lazy and messy, but capable of bursts of courage and humanity), by the always kind and caring wife Marge and their three children Bart (the classic disobedient troublemaker), Lisa (intelligent and know-it-all) and the little one Maggiealways with the pacifier in the mouth.
Award-winning series – won dozens of awards, including 34 Emmys – irreverent and sassy, over the years (debut dates back to December 17, 1989 even if it arrived in Italy on 1 October 1991), it has influenced the outside world and at the same time has kept pace with the changes of the time. And today that TV is putting more and more bricks, through series, cartoons and films, in the construction of a real inclusiveness, queer characters and stories are more and more widespread. And even the “Simpsons” could continue to make their contribution. Within the series, it should be remembered, there have been more coming outs. Not only the dispoticor Waylon Smitherswho found love in 2021, but also Marge’s sister, Pattyhas been openly lesbian since 2014.
Now it could be Lisa to get closer to the LGBT + world. The showrunner of the series, Al Jean, recently revealed that he believes in the “possibility” that Lisa is indeed a queer character. “In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, it’s definitely a possibility in Lisa’s life. She is open, she loves everything. Why not?”Are the words released to the American magazine Digital Spy by the screenwriter. Over the years it has often been hinted at the possibility that little Lisa was bisexual although the character has had a crush on her schoolmate. Nelson Muntz and in the first few seasons she was obsessed with Corey Hotline (a hot-like phone line answered by the dude Corey Masterson, very popular among Springfield girls).
Together with the showrunner’s words, a series of suggestions would lead to the hypothesis that Lisa may become part of the queer community in the future. For example, in the episode of the 32nd season titled “Mother And Child ReunionA fortune teller tells Lisa that she has a 42% chance of having a boyfriend in the future and a 72% chance of having a girlfriend. “I like those odds!” Lisa answers, reshaping a potential coming out future. Another clue: in the episode of season 23 “Holidays Of Future PassedWhere, a montage of images show the family in the future, Lisa is holding hands with two women on the sofa, suggesting she may be having a polyamorous relationship. Showrunner Al Jean had already talked about potentials sexual identities by Lisa. During an interview with the American magazine “Metro” in 2019, she said that she would see that character well as polyamorous: “I see Lisa as president and possibly polyamorous“. Will this be the case in the future? To find out we will have to wait a bit because, it must be remembered, Lisa is alone for now eight yearsas Lisa’s original voice actress Yeardley Smith recalls: “I’m totally open to the possibilities that you explore other ways of living but she’s eight!”
