The collective of YouTubers with 3.5 million subscribers is celebrating its tenth anniversary with an exceptional bonus on Canal+. The opportunity to return to its creation.
From their small bedroom, they managed to reach hundreds of thousands of people. Everyone was working from home with three pieces of string when producer Lorenzo Benedetti had the brilliant idea of bringing them together under the same banner: Studio Bagel. To start with Greg Guillotin, the king of the hidden camera.
After a career in marketing, a theater school gives him new desires. He decides to trap people in the street and turns into Bengui, a character in his bubble, always walking around with a stuffed dolphin under his arm. “I was posting my videos on Dailymotion when I was contacted to join a web talent collective. I accepted right away,” he recalls. Guillotin joins forces with Natoo, Mister V, Jérôme Niel and the others. They are twelve in all. Together, they give free rein to their imagination. “The particularity of the Bagel was to produce fiction, in opposition to all the creators of the time – including those of the Bagel – who made sketches”, explains Mr. Poulpe.
For the first time, creatives have the means to fulfill their ambitions and are paid for their work. Videos under five minutes are real little blockbusters. “We did a lot of parodies, we used references to films, to series, but there were also more metaphorical ideas, which I personally preferred”, explains Natoo.
The latter was 27 when she joined Studio Bagel. A year ago, she left the police to start on the Net. “I made my videos at home. It was funny to find myself in such a big project, with a real set, several cameras. »
At the helm of this digital machine, Axel Maliverney. “I was working with Jerome Niel when Lorenzo Benedetti contacted us to find talent. We chose profiles that first had personal affinities and we completed with others whose universes were unique,” he comments. At his side and writing, Monsieur Octopus. “There were three videos a week to produce, it required a lot of management”, summarizes the latter. For Bagel, he first works on the texts before passing in front of the camera. Everything changes when Canal gets her hands on this goose that lays the golden eggs. “We were very proud that they took us over, TV was the holy grail for all of us, and Canal was the school of humor,” says Greg Guillotin.
With “Le dézapping du avant”, in 2013, the channel offered them a daily slot, just before “Le grand journal”. Octopus will also leave the Bagel ship to present the weather forecast on Michel Denisot’s set. “Even though it wasn’t my style to do political humor, I went for it without hesitation because it was TV. And then it was Canal that allowed me to do my following shows. Suffice to say that no one else would have accepted these wacky ideas! »
Difficult to miss the thorny problem of the place of women in these contents
Bagel has dared everything. Terrorism, religion, war… all the themes are there, with more or less finesse. “We had extraordinary freedom, it makes you wonder how certain videos were able to come out,” admits Greg Guillotin. Ten years later, “The Chinese counter-attack” makes people cringe. “Today, we wouldn’t even think of writing that,” concedes Octopus. And then, on closer inspection, it is difficult to miss the thorny problem of the place of women in these contents.
Touching, violence… the woman is object or pushed-ball by these gentlemen. “Bengui practiced heavy flirting in the middle of the street, I could never do such a thing now, adds Guillotin. The first sketches, I do not wear them proudly. »
The three girls in the group are rarely headliners. When they are, it’s to talk about fashion or sex toys. “We had more sexy nurse roles than doctors,” says Natoo. But for all that, I never felt less listened to because I was a woman. »
“You’re a feminist… but you suck?”. This sentence was said to me by a member of Studio Bagel
Marion Séclin, she takes less tweezers: stolen sketches, inappropriate remarks, denigration of her work… feminist… but you suck?”. This sentence was said to me by a member of Studio Bagel. It gives you an idea of the atmosphere…” “The position in which we put them was hell! admits Octopus. Fortunately, we have evolved! They were inaudible, under-represented, whereas, let’s be frank, they were much more sophisticated and much less stupid than the guys in their writing. »
“Me, I’m happy that in such a short time we can realize that there was a problem, adds Axel Maliverney. It’s that we’ve come a long way. »
The birthday bonus obviously avoids tensions and awkward moments for a good-natured atmosphere. The goal? Offer an absurd throwback to the band’s histories. “Watching the big reunion of ‘Friends’ seventeen years later, I said to myself that if it had all been more honest, it could have been funny,” says Axel Maliverney. And I imagined a parody version for Bagel. »
This bonus wants above all to celebrate them and please their community.
Lyes Boudechiche, studio director since 2019
Natoo becomes a star in Finland, Mister V is too busy to get out of his private jet when Kevin Razy is a VTC driver. “This bonus wants above all to celebrate them and please their community, summarizes Lyes Boudechiche, director of the studio since 2019. It is a real pleasure to see them reunited again. »
Boudechiche is at the origin of the latest generation Bagel: new talents, new editorial line. And intends to perpetuate the success of a brand that has already largely proven itself.
“The big meeting”, soon on Canal + and on YouTube.
