Canary Carnival

The Carnival of the Canary Islands is a typical Caribbean-style party, the only one, after that of Notting Hill (which takes place in the summer, however) to be based in the old world.

Murgas bands, band concerts and samba schools perform here. Also in Puerto de La Cruz and San Bartolomé de Tirajana there are big parties, in Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen (in Lanzarote), in Puerto del Rosario (in Fuerteventura), in Santa Cruz de La Palma (Island of La Palma) and in San Sebastian de La Gomera (island La Gomera). You will find them all below.

The Carnival of the Indians is a moment not to be missed that traditionally takes place in the Triana district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

With all the irony of the islanders, the Carnaval de los Indianos is a parody of the return of Canarian emigrants to America. Music and a giant white powder cloud welcome the parodies.

The Carnival of Tenerife it begins on the Friday preceding Shrove Tuesday with a grandiose parade which marks the beginning of the Fiesta and which is attended by thousands of people in masks.

The main Carnival takes place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife but the whole island hosts parties, masked balls, parades of musical floats, murgas and local and South American folk dance shows.

The festivities also continue here up to the traditional ceremony of the burial of the sardine.
