Heterobasic, the strange phenomenon: «We have conquered social networks with the parody of the average male»

They are less than thirty years old (24 and 23, to be precise), and within eight months their life has changed, transforming the two former students Valeria De Angelis and Maria Chiara Cicolani first into TikTok phenomena and then into something bigger: the former actresses and daughter authors of the #metoo revolution. Notes on the net by the name of Heterobasic (175,000 followers on Instagram, few on TikTok) the two young women – designer De Angelis, philosopher Cicolani – have become popular by putting the so-called average Italian male, heterosexual and macho, in the sedan through hilarious parodies of males at the stadium (the two of them are from Lazio and go to the Curva Nord), at the museum, at the pub, with friends.

THE PROFILE
«How is the base male? He believes in the herd, that is, in his friends who have to make him have fun, because the woman is crying a lot, says Cicolani – He has the woman, in fact: very long and painful relationships with girls who put them in handcuffs. Then he studies economics, does crypto (cryptocurrencies, ed) and has a dog ». Their sketches, born for fun on Instagram, are particularly effective on TikTok, where they are followed by a mixed audience, “70% women and 30% men”, with a hard core of fans from the LGBTQ universe and a few but loyal straight males basis: «Tik Tok is perfect for our comedy, made up of quick sketches, in the reel format. And then people are younger and open-minded: once a video of ours ended up on Facebook by chance, it was a massacre. I think it’s also a generational thing.” The heaviest criticisms, they explain, «are those that come to us from people who accuse us of having appropriated masculine equipment, a certain system of values, a world. You feel all the outrage towards two women who do men’s things ».

Behind the joke, the joke and the irony, in the Heterobasics project there is an important reflection on gender and on the new balance between masculine and feminine: «Men say it, and it’s a bit true: it’s not a great time to be male. Today they are asked to abandon toxic masculinity, to be more empathetic and somehow feminine. But there is still strong social pressure on them to be financially adept, always on the job at work, and strong fuckers. High school kids today feel this discomfort very strongly. They don’t study, they don’t work, they are in full crisis».

ANGER
Crisis that is often accompanied by anger at the progressive emancipation of the female counterpart: «The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial, with what followed the sentence, publicly exploded the anger accumulated over the years towards #metoo. A bit as if the males had taken back everything that is or nuost (imitates Gomorrah, ed). Somewhere on the net, for the occasion, hatred for Asia Argento has even re-emerged. The question is doubtful, but cheering Depp in that way makes us understand that the #metoo has been experienced by many as a witch hunt ». In Rome at the end of July on the stage of the Videocittà festival, in Terni on 31 July, and again in the capital on 14 August, the two actresses imagine a future «more as authors than as influencers. We are focusing on long-term projects, even at the cost of posting less on social media. We have a format in mind, we have written a couple of subjects and we have received good feedback. We’ve also been contacted by generalist networks, but I’m not sure if that audience is suitable. LOL? No thanks, we prefer to watch movies or TV series. Our absolute references are the great Emanuela Fanelli and Caterina Guzzanti».
