Out of Context

On 7 September 2022 the editorial staff of Facta received a report asking to verify the information reported in a post published on August 28, 2022 on Facebook, which reads: «” It doesn’t matter how many Ukrainians die. How many women, children, civilians, soldiers will die. We do not care. It’s like a great football match and we want to win. Ukraine cannot make a decision on peace. The decision on peace can only be taken in Washington, but as long as we want to continue this war, we will fight until the death of the last Ukrainian ”. Senator Richard Black, United States of America! ‘

It is information reported without the context necessary for its understanding, which conveys false news.

First of all, Richard Black he was never a senator from the United States of America, but a member of the Virginia General Assembly, where he was first elected as a deputy (from 1998 to 2006) and then as a senator (from 2012 to 2020). Black’s positions on foreign policy have long been considered quite controversial and in 2018 some of his appearances on Russian and Chinese state TVs and on the channels of the Islamist paramilitary Hezbollah formed a lot of discussion. On these occasions Black argued the baseless conspiracy theory that British intelligence was planning a fake chemical attack to blame Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

We now come to the sentence that is the subject of the report. The post refers to an interview released April 24, 2022 by Richard Black at Schiller InstituteAn international political and economic think tank, and in particular to the response provided at minute 31:29 of the film, when Black argues: “The United States and NATO don’t care how many Ukrainians die. Civilians, women, children, soldiers. We do not care. It became a great football match. You know, we have our team and they have their team. We want to get the highest score and win. And, you know, it doesn’t matter how many of our players get injured on the pitch, as long as we win ».

To the minute 39:35 of the video, Black also adds: “I don’t think Ukraine has a say in the decision on peace or war. I think the decision on peace or war is made in Washington, DC. As long as we want the war to continue, we will fight it, using the Ukrainians as delegates, and we will fight it to the last Ukrainian ».

As it becomes clear listening to the entire intervention (the transcript of which is available here), Richard Black does not speak as a representative of American institutions, but gives his critical opinion on the work of the Biden administration in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. Black’s words must therefore not be interpreted literally, but as a parody of American choices in foreign policy and are sarcastically conveyed.
An excerpt from Black’s speech it’s a lotcirculated on social networks in Italian, but the tone of his arguments has been misunderstood, to the point of being conveyed like admission of American disinterest in the fate of the Ukrainian people.
