Sara Drago, Call My Agent Italy and the irony that saves you

It went more or less like this. To turn Call My Agent – Italy, Sara Drago had to get an agent. Thirty-three years old, origins from the Brianza area, the Faculty of Philosophy left in the first year for the Accademia dei Filodrammatici in Milan, a lot of theater behind her, she made her debut on the small screen in the role of Lea, a workaholic agent of the phantom and renowned actor agency CMA. Agency in the center of Call My Agent – Italythe Roman (and successful) version of the famous French series, then exported all over the world, Dix pour cent – Call my agent!. Six episodes, produced by Sky Studios and Palomar, and broadcast on Sky Serie and streaming on NOW, which ironically tell the story behind the scenes of the Italian entertainment world. We laugh and have fun. Guest stars playing (more or less) themselves: Paola Cortellesi, Paolo Sorrentino, Stefano Accorsi, Pierfrancesco Favino, Matilda De Angelis and Corrado Guzzanti.

How did you approach this first important role?

«I’m a huge fan of the original series, after the audition I was incredulous. I approached Lea by studying a lot, working on the text, on the gestures. She is a woman who loves her work very much, giving up her private life and affection. For her, the agency is like a refuge for her ».

What was most difficult on set?

«I was afraid of failure, something that an artist always has to deal with, indeed that human beings have to deal with. This fear of not being up to par was extinguished by working, also thanks to the great actors I had around me».

As told by two episodes of the series, you worked above all alongside Pierfrancesco Favino and Stefano Accorsi. What struck you most about them?

«I have great esteem for Favino. He has a crazy way of sinking into his role that fascinates me so much. With Accorsi an instinctive alchemy was immediately triggered, it happens only when two characters meet and the distances shorten. I had a lot of fun, even if the real playmate for the whole series was Maurizio (Paving stone, another CMA agent, ed)”.

What are the main differences you have found between set and theatre?

«The tests, in the meantime. The relationship with the public. And then going into more detail, the press conference, the preview where you sit in the front row. I also had to find a press office. And on the set there are a thousand figures, while in the theater you do everything, especially when you are not in a permanent theater and work with small companies».

What got you into acting?

«I fell in love with it as a little girl, when they took me to see the theater with school. I think it’s a passion that resonates within you. Since middle school I started attending theater courses, even while I was doing artistic gymnastics at a competitive level. When I entered the Academy, I realized that I no longer had the time or desire to do anything else».

Did they understand you at home?

“My parents have always been cooperative. They have never hindered me, also because I have a very strong character. It was as if there was no room for that possibility. Although of course, like all parents, they would like stability and security for their children. The theater certainly doesn’t give them to you.’

What do you bring with you from artistic gymnastics?

«Determination and perseverance. I have always continued to study every day, whether or not I had a job at that time».

In Call My Agent – Italy Matilda De Angelis plays an actress who ends up at the center of a social shit storm. Your Instagram profile is closed. You are scared?

«At the moment I have decided to open another one just for work. I certainly did it also because of the risk one can fall into. It only takes a second to step on shit. And I say this without wanting to devalue the importance of paying attention to language and certain issues. But the world of social media is wicked. So at least for now I prefer to keep the private outside, then I hope to find a balance”.

Fear the popularity that might come from Call My Agent?

«From a certain point of view, if it were to happen, I will watch over my private life with love, what I feel towards myself and towards my work. I want to keep my feet on the ground. I would like not to let a hypothetical popularity distract me, which I hope with all my heart anyway. If you do TV, you also have a better chance that theaters will open their doors to you».

How did you choose your agent?

«I had no expectations other than to meet a person who had art at heart and who would take me with the desire to build something together. with Donatella (French peopleed) it happened».

What is your idea of the entertainment world?

“The one of Call My Agent it’s a fantastic version, I think the reality is even more grotesque. In the meantime, I went to the preview of the series with a pair of very high shoes and a size bigger than mine. I had fun”.

What do you wish for?

«To maintain a gaze that points far away, without letting me be crushed. I am extremely perfectionist. Anxiety crushes me. What saves me is irony, I always make a great parody of myself. In the end, even if perfect, I think I’m someone you can have fun with. Fortunately”.
