The great table will be held in public at Saint-Melaine cloister in Rennes and live from Falls of night on July 8 and 9, 2022. Performance imagined by Pascal Rome, it takes the form of a radio program where pseudo-experts talk about the proposals of the festival they and she attended. It’s as much a nod to cultural journalism as it is a humorous and self-deprecating look at the world of performing arts. Pascal Roma and Ronan Letourneurwho plays the role of the animator, present this program to us.
Good evening and welcome to this new issue of The great tablea show by the company Opus and its founder, Pascal Romepresented in public in Rennes on July 8 and 9, 2022 as part of the Falls of night. In this pseudo-show, a parody of a live radio broadcast, experts in nothing at all gather at the table of producer Antoine Delonguy, played by Ronan Letourneur, and talk about the shows offered by the festival. An exercise in offbeat and immediate art criticism in which Les Tombées de la nuit and their programming become the subject of a new show, because for Pascal Rome, ” everything can become a show “.
former teacher, Pascal Rome gravitates in the entertainment world since the 1990s. First a great adept set designer of recycling, he became a creator of shows with the company 26,000 covers which he launched in 1995, before founding Opus in 2000: the Office of Singular Universe Manufacturers. These manufacturers specialize in street and object theatre, like one of their latest shows, The Great Storeroominspired by garage sales, and presented in 2019 at the Falls of night. Pascal Rome is indeed a regular at the Rennes festival since this is his tenth visit this year!
” It’s an event I’ve been very attached to for a long time, even before Opus. Claude Guinard [directeur des Tombées de la nuit, ndlr.] has made this event a place of possibilities where people regularly come to test emerging shows. It’s very important festivals that allow companies to check that their shows are on the right track. It’s also a festival that has a great audience, regulars, novices, these are valuable insights into our work “, entrusts Pascal Rome. This is found in the programming of Falls of night the taste for risk, curiosity, the search for different places and audiences, the confusion between fiction and reality that also drive his company.
It is indeed this game with the reference points of the real that is at work in The great table. But, abandoning the objects, the company Opus ventures there in a show of words. ” As it sometimes happens, it’s a show that was created quickly, on the job“, recount Ronan Letourneur. It’s on the occasion of the dance festival Panic at the dance hall in Niort, where the company is based, in 2019, the concept of the show was born. In 2021, The great tablereturns to the same festival in a more polished version. She is then spotted by Claude Guinard which invites the company Opus to try the experience with Falls of night. It will therefore be the first time that she is represented outside the festival where she was born.
More a form than a content, a concept more than a content, The great table reinvents itself with each performance. “We have the framework“, Explain Pascal Rome. “We are seated around a large table, the show lasts an hour with credits at the beginning and end. Between the two, everything we are going to present, we will have gleaned during our daily walk around the festival. In the same way that we glean objects to make shows of objects, here we glean impressions, feelings“. And Ronan Letourneur to complete:we attend shows with an interested gaze: we observe a material and wonder how we are going to be able to exploit it, work on it. The goal is to extract something that gives us material to embroider and derive“.
From these performance experiences, Ronan Letourneur, Pascal Rome and other performers The great table — Emmanuelle Vein, Jacques Bourdeau and Louis Maestro — compare their impressions and compose the framework of the show in the space of two or three hours. “We work very quickly on collective proposals. We have no choice since we have an appointment. This is very new for us as a working method. Often the showsOpus are done in several layers, with a time of maturation, tests, there we do not have time“says Pascal Rome. “We are close to performance“, continues Ronan Letourneur.
This instantaneous writing is accompanied by an effect of immediacy, a direct dialogue between The great table and the festival environment. “Spectators may have seen the performances we are talking about. Scheduled artists invite us to come and see their shows to talk about them, then come to attend ours. It brings everyone together around the object of the show which is the festival“, Explain Ronan Letourneur.
Speaking of the festival and its programming, The great table assumes a function of cultural mediation, of bridge between the artistic proposals and the public. But this mediation is taken in the second degree. “We combine a reading of the landscape, in this case the artistic proposals, the behavior of the spectators, ours, with things that have nothing to do with sauerkraut“, details Pascal Rome. “I find it interesting to place the live performance as a counterpoint, a distorting mirror. It’s like a press review of the festival, but in a burlesque mode, with outdated characters who are presented as people from public society drawn by lot to take part in the show and contribute their expertise, without us really know what this one is based on», continues the director.
Ronan Letourneur, in the role of host Antoine Delonguy, tries somehow to moderate his guests, and is often overwhelmed. “Like he’s got a team of four crazy dogs he’s trying to get back on the road», has fun Pascal Rome. In the first versions of the show at the Panique au dancing festival, the pseudo-experts even launched into choreographic demonstrations to show what this or that show could have done better while a real doctor, Doc Ravarguez, also an actor, intervened. to warn about the medical risks associated with dance moves.
A nod to art criticismwho cares a bit», The great table is also an opportunity to distance a certain seriousness, even an elitism, from the entertainment world, to have fun with its codes and its practices to rediscover its ability to bind us in a common complicity. Ultimately, a show that fits perfectly into the spirit of the Falls of night.
