“Trumpty Dumpty”: the “New York Post” lets go of Trump after his disappointment in the midterms

In recent years, the New York Post of Rupert Murdoch – who also owns the group holding Fox News – has never failed to support Donald Trump. But these midterms mixed for the Republican camp, which saw the defeat of many candidates dubbed by the ex-president, change the situation. The tabloid thus mocks its former champion on the front page of its issue this Thursday.

American midterm elections are always a form of referendum on the administration and the incumbent president. This time the midterms were also a moment of truth for the former. Indeed, Donald Trump sponsored many candidates ahead of the ballot, dreaming of a Republican tidal wave on the new Congress and at the head of the States to facilitate a return to the White House.

Disappointing results for the party, close to the billionaire defeated in the key states, spectacular re-election of his rival Ron DeSantis as governor of Florida: Tuesday evening did not live up to Donald Trump’s expectations.

Strong protests are already being heard against him, even within his movement. And Donald Trump has lost his luster so much that a media which is nevertheless historically attached to him did not hesitate to make fun of him on the front page of its issue this Thursday: the New York Post.

“Will the Party be able to pick up the pieces?”

The New York tabloid is indeed owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns the conservative Fox News television network. And so far he had never failed the billionaire, even supporting him very officially from the 2016 campaign.

The position adopted this time is quite different. On the front page, we see Donald Trump, his face huge and egg-shaped, squeezed into a skimpy shirt and tie ensemble, seated on a low wall, in front of a residence that seems to be inspired by his Florida estate of Mar-a. -The girlfriend. The whole thing is accompanied by an acerbic title and caption.

“Trumpty Dumpty,” the headline proclaims, an expanding paragraph: “Don (who failed to build a wall) took a big fall – can the GOP men pick up the pieces?”

The newspaper rolls for DeSantis

It is a parody of an ancestral folkloric rhyme, very familiar to Anglo-Saxon audiences, featuring a character generally represented in the form of an egg: “Humpty Dumpty was sitting on a wall, Humpty Dumpty made a great fall, all the king’s horses and all his men could not muster Humpty Dumpty”. This laughable character also appears in the Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

In fact, the reversal of the New York Post date of the day before. On Wednesday, in fact, it celebrated on its front page the triumph of Republican Ron DeSantis in Florida. The governor, who could be Donald Trump’s rival in 2024, appeared there with his wife and children, in front of a star-spangled banner deployed in the background.

The title? a play on words, a little light but very clear: “DeFUTURE”.
